Tourism Internship

This program takes place in an local agency in the touristic area of Quito. Here they work with different destinations around Ecuador but the main locations are two lodges in the lower Amazon region that the agency runs to 100% and Galapagos tours with cruises as well as Island hopping solutions.

The agency has a long experience with tourism and as their office is quit small the workers all work closely to offer the best for their clients that are both walking in from the street and through Internet. All this makes it a great place for an intern that wants to get a good mix of client contact as well as working behind the screen to make sure that everything works in the best way.

Most interns will also visit one of the lodges in the Amazon region to work and help with logistic next to the tourists as this is the best way to see the results of the preparation in the office with everything from making sure that they have food in the kitchen to gasoline for the canoes.

Interns Role

Interns will to begin with work in the office in Quito where they will help take care of anything from clients that walks in from the street to answering and handle bookings or questions over Internet. Interns will also have a chance to help contacting agencies around the world to offer their destinations as most of the staff don't have fluent English. As the interns gets into the work and show that they are responsible and communicates good with the staff they can often work more independently with for example try to contact agencies in other countries to offer the programs or maybe help translating information to another language than Spanish or English if possible as it might help the staff with future clients.

Depending on time the interns normally visit the lodges in the Amazon region for a period of time to see and learn about the work next to the tourists. Here they will work next to the staff with everything from cleaning the lodges and serving food to cooking or general maintenance to make sure everything is prepared and works.

Location And Working Hours

The program takes place mainly in Quito but if time permits also in the Amazon region.

In Quito interns work Monday to Friday from about 09:00 to 18:00 with a break for lunch and if they work at the lodges they work depending on what needs to be done Monday to Sunday so it is hard to say any hours but there will be plenty of time for lunch and relaxing as well.

Our Experience

For tourism students this has been a great placement as they depending on time, Spanish language, personality and experience/education have a chance to see and work with many different things from meeting the clients to follow them on the tour.

Interns needs to be open to talk to people and though English works fine with most clients they need Spanish to talk to most of the staff so the more they have the better. A shy person will have a hard time to work here as everything is about communication.
