There are many different social work projects in Ecuador and though most of them are NGO's there are also some that belongs to the government.
These projects normally has a lot to do as most of the people they work with come from poor families who at the same time have problems with drug, abuse, violence and alcoholism. As all over the world, women and children are the ones that suffers the most in these situations and but the main goal for the projects are to solve the problems and unite the family if possible but this is often a long process and it doesn't always end as they wish.
These projects often work close with other organizations to be able to work in the best way. This can vary from case to case and project to project but could for example mean that they take help of or help organizations that mainly work with phsycologists, lawyers, orphanages, street children center or women support groups.
Interns will work side by side with the social workers in their cases to learn and help as best they can. For the people in the cases it is not always that easy to open up for a new face that shows up with the social worker that they have gotten to know so it takes time for interns to get into the cases some times but they will also help with the cases to for example build their files with info, evaluate the situation and look for solutions.
The projects are located in the Andean Mountains.
Interns work Monday to Friday from about 08:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch but hours can vary depending on what they work with.
Spanish is vital in these projects as everything is about information. We have though often interns that arrives with basic
Spanish and after taking classes they have high beginner or low intermediate Spanish and with an open and outgoing personality
they have advanced to good intermediate after some time in the project.
Some education is also important to have to be able to understand, learn and also give something back to the projects.
