Many people use private laboratories as it is most usual that you go to a doctor in clinics or consulting offices where they don't have
a laboratory or they are connected to a private one. Many times people here knows what to test when it comes to parasites, amoebas or
just for a general health checkup so to save money they first go to the clinic as the doctor will charge for consulting just by
telling them what to check for in the laboratory.
The areas they work with at the laboratory can vary a bit but in general they have hematology, coagulating, biochemistry,
hormones, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis, parasitology, cytology and histopathology and sometimes they also are connected to
or have other departments within the building like hand surgery, x-ray, different specialist doctors or general medicine doctors for
consulting.
Interns will work together with the staff at the laboratory where they will take samples of the patients that comes in that they take to process. They might also help collecting samples from patients that comes to one for the specialist doctors that are working in the building or join on house calls for patients that can't make it to the laboratory for any reason.
The laboratories are located in Quito
Interns will work from Monday to Friday from about 08:00 to 18:00 with a break for lunch.
Most things in medicine like procedures etc are in general named in Latin all over the world so interns should be able to recognize this even if they don’t have the highest Spanish level but it can be recommended to at least take a week with Spanish classes to learn a bit about tools and equipment that are used at a laboratory.
