Journalism Internship

This program gives journalist students an opportunity to work with both big and small newspapers in Ecuador where they will both work together with the rest of the journalists but they will also have the chance to work independently.

Interns Role

Interns normally start working alongside one of the full time staffers until they start to get into the routines but then they will also have the chance to work alone at least part time to come up with ideas to notices, gather information, take pictures if they have a camera etc all the way to a finished article.

Everything they do and write will be checked and edited by the news organization but most of our interns working in a newspaper have gotten at least one article published. The program takes interns around in the area or town and sometimes they might also travel to other cities to cover a story for a day or two if they choose to but in these cases they need to cover their own cost as the news organization normally don't. This also includes most local transportations as well.

The program encourage interns to work more and more independent but in cooperation with the rest of the staff as this will gain them in more experience.

Many of our interns also combine their weekend trips around Ecuador to write articles and take pictures for work. This is of course not a demand but why not combine your skills with some fun and exploration in the free time as well.

Location And Working Hours

The newspapers are located in the Andean mountains and in the Amazon region. It might also be possible to work in the Galapagos Island but this is smaller and the position is not always available.

Interns work Monday to Friday from about 08:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch though hours can vary from day to day depending on what the intern is doing as they sometimes travel in and around the town they work in to work on their stories. Many interns also work while traveling on their free time in the weekends as they might see something or come up with an idea for a reportage.

Our Experience

For a journalism student this is a great program as most of our interns have been able to publish some of their work. The most important is that the interns are open, have quite good Spanish and some experience or education as work is everything about talking to people and without any experience or education it will be very hard to be able to work independent.
