Human Rights Internship

Human rights have various areas but they are all based on the law, to help people with their rights and to defend them if needed. As the social security net in Ecuador is almost non existing it means that a lot of peoples only chance to stand up for their rights or even know what their rights are is to get help from one of many human rights organization and while some of the organizations help with various types of cases in a smaller office others are bigger and have different departments for blacks rights, Indigenous peoples rights, women and children's rights, domestic violence etc.

Most of the human rights projects also have social workers and psychologists or at least they are cooperating with another project for this as many of their client's needs help due to problems within the family.

The projects also try to work on campaigns or workshops to inform people about their rights and situation to hopefully help prevent more people from getting into problems but also to support and help those that are in problems to be able to create a better life for them.

Interns Role

Interns will work together with the lawyer and/or the other staff depending on where help is needed. Together they will work with clients to collect information to build up the cases that will be taken to court.

Sometimes the projects also work with information campaigns or workshops to enlighten people about their rights and in that way maybe prevent problems in the future.

Location And Working Hours

The projects are located in the Andean region.

Interns will work Monday to Friday from about 08:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch but hours can vary a bit due to the cases they work with.

Our Experience

Though Spanish level and experience and/or education within the field are important, personality is also something that judge what they will get out of their experience. An open person that shows interest and initiative will have a good experience, many times even without a high level of Spanish.

Initiative is important as the staff often take this as a sign of interest so they will most lightly get into their tasks faster.

It takes normally about a week to get into the work and for some it even takes up to two weeks before they start to understand their tasks and how things work.
