HIV Internship Program

In Ecuador there is a big problem with especially young people that have unprotected sex and this shows easy with a lot of young girls pregnant at ages even as low as 13 to 14 years. Due to unprotected sex not just young people risk to become parents to early but they also risk getting sexual transmitted diseases like HIV that without medicine turns into AIDS and as there are an growing amount of people infected it is an important work.

The biggest risk group is gay men that don't use protection and on the coast is where they have most cases but young people are also important to get informed and educated as they are a growing sexual active group that of course also is our future.

As many young people become parents so early it is important to not only inform about HIV but also about other sexual transmitted diseases that are a growing problem and like HPV, syphilis, gonorrhea etc. Naturally it is also important that young people can keep studying and start their lives as adults before having a family of their own that they can't even support.

Interns Role

Volunteers will work together with the other staff of this project in their information campaigns. They might work in different ways such as collecting information, arrange ways of presenting information and in the end use this information to talk to people that might be in the risk group and of course young people. When they talk to young people it can mean that they will have like a lecture in a school but it can also be that they invite the people of an area to the community house and volunteers will take part of all of this work but exactly what they will do depends a lot on their Spanish level of course.

Volunteers will work mainly in Santa Elena but if they need help with their campaigns in Puerto Lopez they might get transferred there.

Location And Working Hours

The project mainly take place on the coast of Ecuador.

Interns will work Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch but hours can vary a bit depending the campaigns they do from time to time.

Our Experience

This project is a lot about information so Spanish is really required for interns to get involved. Interns also needs to be forward and have some ideas of their own to hopefully help the project to move forward as well as getting the attention of young people while talking about this subject.
