Eco Tourism Internship Program

The program takes place in either the Galapagos Islands or in the Amazon region where the two projects are quite different from each other.

In the Galapagos Island they work with a mix of things within the project and it is a bit smaller. The center is open for visitors to come and relax, enjoy some good Ecuadorian food or walk around to see the giant tortoises that lives. They also have a small agriculture part where they make sure they have food for the giant tortoises as well as fruits like Papaya or Bananas for visitors to enjoy.

In the Amazon the project is based at an office from where they arrange eco-tourism trips to different communities around town for people to enjoy this amazing nature and its culture. The trips can be from one day up to several with lodging, guides, activities etc and everything has to be coordinated with the people that lives in the communities. The idea is to help the communities that in general are quite poor to live with nature instead of just of it and in that way being able to keep their way of life and traditions.

Interns Role

In the Galapagos Islands interns will work with a lot of small things as the center is smaller. They will for example help to take care of visitors that arrives and specially foreigners as nobody at the center speak English and they often help to explain what they can offer visitors, show them around and help serving food. Interns also help with the day to day tasks that includes making sure that the area is clean, feed the giant tortoises, help out in the agriculture part and any ongoing ideas they have at the time but they can also come with their own ideas about making signs for visitors or maybe help translating information from Spanish to English that can help them at the center.

At the Amazon project interns will be based at the office in town where they will help with information for visitors. As nobody here speaks good English they can help to translate information, maybe approve the homepage, talk to foreign tourists that come is or even try to contact agency´s in other parts or countries to offer what they have.
Interns might also visit the different locations and communities where they offer activities and visits to help improve the programs or come with new ideas on what to offer. As a foreigner they might have better ideas on how or what tourists might want and they can also help with information that might be missing or only in Spanish.

Location And Working Hours

The program takes place in either the Amazon or the Galapagos Islands.

Interns will work Monday to Friday from about 07:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch but hours can vary a lot as work many times depends on what they are doing and interns also might work on their own small projects.

Our Experience

Work is most of the time independent so interns need to create their own ideas and projects to work with so they should not expect someone to always have a plan for them. What they need in the projects are interns that come with ideas and a fresh perspective about what tourists want to see and how they can present things different or new things they can do so that the projects can keep growing.

Spanish language is definitely important even though English often works with tourists. Also some experience is helpful but this can for example be experience of traveling to and visit eco-tourist places but for tourism students it can also be a good experience to see and learn.
