Conservation Volunteer Program

These projects aim to protect and conserve the environment while giving people, both locals and tourists, a chance to see and learn about the beauty of nature and fauna. The projects are run by private people or organizations that struggle to keep moving on in the projects with whatever founds or help that they can get through for example eco-tourism or volunteers and they also works with the nature instead of working against it.

The projects work with different things within their project but they are quite similar from location to location. Here they work with for example reforestation as one of the goals is to have only native species and in some places like the Galapagos Islands there are plenty of introduced species that has to be removed constantly as they keep spreading.

For the reforestation work they need plants so to keep costs down it is common to have a tree nursery where the project can grow plants that they see are needed. To start a tree nursery they need to collect seeds that they get from their land so quit a lot of time is needed to do this as well.

The different projects that we work with also have their own special projects that they are working on and this can vary from time to time and year to year but in the Galapagos Island they also work with for example eco-tourism, agriculture and Giant tortoises together with the National Park and in the Andes they try to educate and show locals how to work with the nature and its resources without destroying it.

Volunteers Role

Volunteers will work with the staff in the projects to help them in any ongoing project that they have at the moment. It will in most cases be physical work and even long hikes to get to where they will work so it can be quit demanding under a burning sun.

Volunteers might for example work with collecting seeds and small plants that will be taken to a tree nursery go grow strong before being planted in different locations throughout the project. This of course includes taking care of the tree nursery that constantly needs care with water and maybe protection against the sun to survive.

In some projects it is important to constantly work with removal of introduced species that easily takes over the land and' suffocates the native plants. In the Galapagos Islands especially this is an ongoing project and it is hard to eradicate these introduced species as birds eat the fruits in other locations and bring the seeds all around the Islands through their poo.

In the Galapagos Islands volunteers might also help with other things like looking after the Giant tortoises that lives within the project. This includes some feeding and cleaning but they live in a quite natural habitat so it is not to much that needs to be done most of the days. Other things that volunteers might take part of is eco-tourism and agriculture that is something the projects might have to be able to be self-going.

Location And Working Hours

The projects are located in the Galapagos Islands and in the Andean mountains within an area called Intag.

Volunteers work from Monday to Friday from about 07:30-08:00 to 17:00 with a break for lunch.

Our Experience

This is a great program for the one that is interested of nature and likes to work physically. Volunteers needs to be a bit self-going and don’t mind to live and work in simple and/or hard conditions and in many cases alone with only Spanish speaking locals in remote locations.

Girls that have traveled alone sometimes have felt a bit vulnerable working and living in a remote project with only men and no other volunteer.
